A series of necklaces and brooches featuring flocked aluminium cans, brass and freshwater pearls.
Shown at the Nelson Suter Art Society's McKee Gallery, Nelson, NZ
This body of work is an iteration of the Project Roadkill Series. The works incorporate professionally flocked found aluminium cans, which have been combined with forged brass and traditionally hand-knotted freshwater pearls, elevating detritus to precious objects.
The works examine the first six months of being a full-time artist after graduation. Navigating the art industry and trying to find your footing, your voice, and your market segment simultaneously can be exhausting and treacherous for emerging artists. While getting used to rejection and self-doubt, successes are celebrated on short-lived social media posts. Additionally, dealing with galleries and the hustle of selling yourself and your work leads to questioning your value and identity as an artist over and over again.
This project has been presented with the support of Creative New Zealand.
